Why replace your windows?

Older windows can start looking worn out and unappealing, so replacing them is one of the ways you can boost your curb appeal. New frames and glass also change how the house feels inside: brighter, quieter and easier to keep at an even temperature.

Replacement is also a chance to change the style: larger openings, sliders or casements instead of single-hung windows, or a frame color that matches new paint.

Windows get outdated after a few years, so stay ahead of industry trends. Dual-pane glass and low-maintenance frames are common choices today.

How do new windows save energy?

Dual-pane glass, low-E coatings and tight seals slow the heat that moves through a window, so less of the heating and cooling you pay for leaks out.

Older windows let drafts through worn seals and gaps around the frame, which increases the heat exchange between your house and the outdoors.

Proper window installation reduces the rate of heat exchange and allows your HVAC to operate more efficiently. Since your HVAC isn’t working as hard to maintain the temperature, you save up on energy and repair costs due to lesser wear on your system.

When you compare models, look at the NFRC label, which rates a window’s energy performance, and at ENERGY STAR certification for your climate.

When should you replace your windows?

Window replacement is a larger project than a repair. However, it is an expense that should occur about every 20 years and is worth the investment.

As frames age, moisture and debris collect in the gaps between the frame and the wall, and untended frames are a common place for mold and rot to start.

Once mold or rot spreads into the wall around the window, a window job turns into a framing and drywall repair.

Replacing a failing window early protects the wall around it; by the time the source of the moisture is found, the damage is often already done.

You should think about investing in a window installation project as soon as your windows are 20 years old or show signs of rot. Leaks, fogging between the panes and drafts are other signs; for a budget-minded plan, see our window remodeling guide.

How does a window replacement project run?

1. Estimate. We measure each opening and check the frames for rot. 2. Choose. You pick the frame material, the style and the glass. 3. Order and permit. We order the windows and file the permit when one is needed. 4. Install. Our crew removes the old units, sets, flashes and seals the new ones. 5. Walkthrough. We check that every window opens and locks, and clean up.

New windows also cut the noise from traffic and neighbors. Replace any windows that stick, have swollen or have corroded so they no longer open or lock properly.

Which window type and frame material fit your home?

Vinyl frames are low-maintenance and a frequent choice for replacements. Fiberglass stays stable through temperature swings. Wood suits older homes and needs repainting. Aluminum gives slim frames.

New windows also help when you sell, because buyers see an updated house. Since the home has new windows, they don’t have to worry about doing the project before moving in.

Retrofit windows fit inside the existing frame with less disruption to stucco and trim; full-frame replacement removes the old frame when it is damaged. We tell you which one your openings need.

FAQs

Do You Offer Free Quotes?

Yes, we do. We are happy to give you a free quote for your project. You can expect a response within 48 hours!

We will absolutely help you attain permits for your project. You can rely on us to work with the local government to ensure we have the green light to move forward with our plans.

We can’t give you a specific number without seeing your home. The price depends on the number and size of the windows, the frame material and glass, retrofit or full-frame installation, and any rot repair around the openings. We price each line in a free estimate.

It depends on the city and the job: a like-for-like retrofit is often handled differently from enlarging an opening or changing the framing, and replacement windows may have to meet California’s Energy Code (Title 24, Part 6). We check your city’s rules at the estimate and file the permit when one is needed.

A retrofit window is installed inside the existing frame, so the stucco or siding around it stays in place. When the old frame is rotted or damaged, a full-frame replacement is the better choice.
