# Siding Installation and Replacement

EcoStar Remodeling & Construction handles siding installation and replacement for homeowners in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and our other California offices. As a licensed general contractor (CSLB 1034806), we take care of design, permits and construction, from removing the old siding to the final walkthrough.

Siding is the outer layer that keeps rain, sun and wind off the wall framing, so it decides how the house looks and how well the walls stay dry. We offer a variety of siding options, including vinyl, fiber cement, and engineered wood, so you can choose the right style, color, and material to match your home’s design and budget.

To start, call us or ask for a free quote. We look at the walls, trim and windows, note any soft or damaged areas, and give you a written scope and price.

## What does siding replacement include?

Our siding specialists take pride in their precise work and attention to detail. A replacement starts with removing the old siding and checking the sheathing and framing underneath for rot, termite damage or past leaks, which are repaired before anything new goes on. A few warped or cracked boards on one wall can often be replaced on their own; soft sheathing, rot that spreads behind the boards or siding that is loose across several walls points to a full replacement.

Next comes the weather barrier: house wrap over the sheathing, and flashing around every window, door and roof-to-wall joint, lapped so water runs out and down. Then the new siding, trim and corner pieces go on, the joints are sealed, and painted products get their finish coats.

## How does a siding project run?

**1. Estimate.** We walk around the house, measure the walls and check for soft sheathing, gaps around windows and signs of past leaks, then write up the scope and price. **2. Design.** You choose the material, profile, color and trim details. **3. Permits.** When your city requires a permit for the work, we prepare the paperwork and file it. **4. Build.** We remove the old siding, repair what we find, install the weather barrier and flashing, then the new siding and trim. **5. Walkthrough.** We walk the finished walls with you and close any punch-list items.

## What drives the cost of siding?

The wall area and the material set most of the price, since each material has its own cost and installation method. A two-story house needs more scaffolding and labor than a single-story one. What sits under the old siding counts too: rotted sheathing, termite damage or missing flashing is fixed before the new siding goes on, and its extent shows once the old layer is off. Trim, corners, the number of windows and doors to flash around, and paint for painted products complete the number. Each line is itemized in your estimate, and our [home remodeling financing](https://ecosremodeling.com/financing/) page shows how to spread the cost.

## Which siding material fits your home?

**Vinyl** is light, carries its color all the way through and is cleaned rather than repainted. **Fiber cement siding** is made of cement, sand and cellulose fibers; it is heavy, holds paint well and is noncombustible. It comes as lap planks, panels and shingles, is cut with dust control and fastened to the framing, and is usually painted in place or bought with a factory finish. **Engineered wood** is wood strands bonded with resin, with the look of wood lap siding at a lighter weight than fiber cement. For the trade-offs between vinyl and real wood, read our guide on [vinyl vs. wood siding](https://ecosremodeling.com/siding/vinyl-vs-wood-siding-materials-which-one-lasts-longer/).

## Do you need a permit to replace siding in California?

It depends on the city and the scope: a small repair in kind is treated differently from stripping whole walls, changing the material or opening the framing around windows. We check your city's rules at the estimate and file the permit when one is required. In the City of Los Angeles, permits go through the Department of Building and Safety (LADBS); in the Bay Area, through each city's permit center.

If your home is in a Fire Hazard Severity Zone mapped by CAL FIRE, the Office of the State Fire Marshal advises hardening the home with ignition-resistant or noncombustible materials against embers, flame contact and radiant heat; fiber cement is one noncombustible siding choice.

## FAQs

Do You Offer Free Quotes? Yes, we do. We are happy to give you a free quote for your project. You can expect a response within 48 hours! Will You Help Me Attain Permits For My Siding Project? We will absolutely help you attain permits for your project. You can rely on us to work with the local government to ensure we have the green light to move forward with our plans. How Much Does Siding Installation Cost? We can’t give you a specific number without seeing your home. The price depends on the wall area, the siding material, the number of stories, the trim and window details, and any damaged sheathing we find under the old siding. We price each line in a free estimate. Can New Siding Go Over the Old Siding? It is sometimes possible, but removing the old layer lets us inspect and repair the sheathing, add a continuous weather barrier and flash the windows and doors properly. Covering old siding can hide rot and trap moisture in the wall. Can You Replace Only the Damaged Sections? Yes. When only part of a wall is warped, cracked or rotted, we can replace those sections and match the profile and color as closely as the available material allows. Where Do You Install Siding? Our crews work out of offices across California. In Northern California, see our [Bay Area remodeling offices](https://ecosremodeling.com/bay-area/) in Alameda, Concord, San Jose and San Mateo, plus Sacramento; in Southern California, our [Los Angeles general contractor page](https://ecosremodeling.com/ecostar-remodeling-and-construction-los-angeles-ca/) covers Encino, Long Beach, Irvine and Rancho Cucamonga.
