## What does mold remediation include?

EcoStar Remodeling & Construction provides mold remediation and inspection for homes in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and our other California offices. As a licensed general contractor (CSLB 1034806), we find the moisture source, remove the mold and rebuild the damaged walls, floors or cabinets.

Mold tends to grow where moisture stays: behind walls, under flooring and in poorly ventilated rooms. A remediation project covers the inspection, containment of the affected area, removal of materials that cannot be cleaned, cleaning and drying, the repair of the leak or ventilation problem behind it, and the rebuild.

It starts with a free estimate visit, where we look for the source, the extent of the damage and what has to be opened up. [Request a mold inspection](https://ecosremodeling.com/free-quote/).

## Why hire a licensed mold remediation contractor?

Cleaning visible mold with household products often treats only the surface, and without containment the spores can spread to other rooms. A licensed mold remediation contractor has the expertise and equipment to properly assess the extent of contamination. The larger part of the job is stopping the water, whether it comes from a plumbing leak, the roof or poor ventilation, so the mold does not come back. The EPA puts it simply: the key to mold control is moisture control. For mold that covers more than about 10 square feet, the EPA points to its guide Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings, which it says applies to other building types too. Our work is backed by a 2-year workmanship warranty.

## How do you know if you have mold in your home?

- One of the most common indicators is a musty or damp odor, especially in enclosed spaces like closets, basements, or under sinks. Black, green or white spots on walls, ceilings or floors are another sign, and what you can see is often a small part of what sits behind the surface.Water damage is one of the biggest contributors to mold growth. Past leaks, a flood or high humidity in bathrooms, kitchens, attics and crawl spaces all raise the risk. Coughing, sneezing or allergy-like symptoms that get worse indoors are another reason to have the home inspected.

## How does the mold remediation process work?

- **1. Inspection.** We find the moisture source and map how far the damage reaches. **2. Containment.** The affected area is sealed off so spores do not travel to the rest of the house. **3. Removal and cleaning.** Materials that cannot be cleaned, such as wet drywall, insulation or carpet, are removed, and hard surfaces are cleaned and dried. **4. Fix the cause.** We repair the leak, the roof or the ventilation problem. **5. Rebuild.** New drywall, flooring or cabinets go in and we walk the finished area with you.

**Mold after a leak or flood:** stop the water first, then dry wet areas and items quickly; the EPA notes that when they are dried within 24 to 48 hours, in most cases mold will not grow. Do not run the heating or air conditioning if you suspect it is contaminated, since it can spread mold through the house. Then call us to inspect and repair the damage.
