A full remodel makes sense when the layout no longer works (too little counter space, too few outlets, a crowded work path), when cabinets or plumbing are failing, or when you want to open the kitchen to the living area. A backsplash of tile or slab protects the wall behind the sink and range. ## Can you open my kitchen to the living room? Yes. An open-concept kitchen removes or widens the wall between the kitchen and the living or dining room. If that wall is load-bearing, an engineer sizes a beam and posts and the change goes on the permit drawings; pipes, ducts or wiring inside the wall are rerouted first. There are three common ways to do it: take the wall out completely and add an island, cut a wide opening and keep a short wall for upper cabinets, or replace the wall with a peninsula that works as a counter on the kitchen side and a breakfast bar on the other. **Open concept in a small kitchen.** A peninsula instead of a full island keeps walkways clear; tall pantry cabinets on the remaining wall make up for lost upper cabinets; one continuous floor and matching lighting tie the kitchen to the living area; and lighter cabinet and counter colors make the combined room feel larger.
